ANHYDROUS Waterless mineral formulas

Transitioning from a traditional water-based sunscreen to a water-free, anhydrous formula offers a completely different sensory and functional experience.


Water creates an ideal breeding ground for bacteria, molds, and yeasts in order to grow, metabolize and reproduce. Water based sunscreens must rely on heavy chemical preservative systems (like parabens, phenoxyethanol, or formaldehyde releasers) to prevent microbial contamination and spoilage during shelf life .

Because water is already the primary base ingredient, these sunscreens tend to wash away, sweat off or dilute much faster when exposed to water or heavy perspiration often requiring more frequent reapplication.


The oil and water separation phenomena

Because oil and water naturally repel each other, liquid lotions require chemical emulsifiers to hold them together in a bottle/tube. When exposed to heat and sunlight or over time sitting on a shelf these emulsions begin to destabilize and separate at a micro level, this is why the instructions tell you to "shake well" to forcefully remix the separated phases before pumping it out.


If a sunscreen has chemically separated in the bottle/tube or on your skin, the UV filters in the lotion will not apply evenly - some areas of the skin receiving more or little or no UV protection.


Degradation under solar radiation - many chemical UV filters in water based formulas undergo active chemical breakdown when struck by UV energy, their molecular structures alter or "photo-degrade" meaning they lose their effectiveness.
